Brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favorite things…so the song goes. Actually, the song comes from one of my favorite movies back when I was 10. The Sound Of Music was responsible for my first crush; Christopher Plummer.
Those "favorite things" that are most near and dear to me (outside of my family and friends) are those books and movies that make me smile. Last year, my husband and I sat with friends and debated our top 5 movie favorites - movies we'd watch over and over again. It's clear favorite films often have a lot to do not just with individual taste, but also with the person’s state of mind when they see the movie.
Since then, I've been polishing my list, making updates when remembering a forgotten film. My movie picks are not the "Greatest" or the "Best" in cinematic history, just the ones that make me smile. Well, the list below represents my favorites for today anyway.
"Moonstruck" - This movie makes me want raise a glass of champagne, drop in a cube of sugar, and shout "Ti Amo"
"Amelie" - Strange, amazing, and very funny movie.
"Harry Potter" - My expectations were very low - I was convinced Harry Potter books were over-hyped. However after watching the first movie, I was totally won over.
"National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" - Dysfunctional families, gagging dogs and really bright Christmas lights. What's not to love?
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - There are so many great parts and quotes from this movie, they are too numerous to mention. Anyone? Anyone?
On the theme of favorites, this issue debuts a new "Favorites" feature (see page 2.)
I guess some credit should be given to Oprah for this one since it contains a "Favorite Things" sort of flavor...but think I'm safe in claiming these favorites as my own since even the great Oprah doesn't own exclusive rights to things I love.
It's fitting that the debut of this new feature should appear in the summer issue - after all, summer is my favorite time of year. Let me know your favorites at louisesukle@womannewspapers.com
